Vihan Lai Kham
A chapel that features exquisite woodcarvings and northern style murals.
The vihan Lai Kam assembly hall at Wat Phra Signh, built in 1345 and renovated in the early 19th century, is a prime example of Lanna temple architecture. It features soaring wing-shaped roofs, lanna wood carvings, and stuccos. Inside, it houses the revered Buddha image, Phra Singh (Lion Buddha), showcasing the graceful ‘Lion’ style influenced by Sukhothai and Indian Pala styles. Every Songkran, Chiang Mai local would invite Phra Singh for a ceremonial procession for bathing rituals. The oldest structure, the gold chadi, was built in 1345 by King Pha Yu to enshrine his father’s ashes.
Since its construction in the 14th century, it has been enlarged considerably. The largest building in the Wat is the Viharn Luang, which houses the highly revered Buddha image, Phra Chao Thong Tip. The gold and copper image of a seated Buddha displaying the subduing Mara mara was cast in 147.
