Wat Phra That Doi Suthep temple in the evening
Wat Phra That Doi Suthep. In the late afternoon, there were fewer people, staying till after sunset to enjoy a quiet moment as the monks began their evening chanting. As soon as it gets dark, the huge spotlights turn the golden stupa and Buddha into shimmering hues of gold.

Late afternoon to avoid the crowd and heat

Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep temple in Chiang Mai
The most famous temple of tourist in Chiang Mai
Wat Phra That Doi Suthep is certainly one of the most important temples in Chiang Mai, as well as one of the most revered among all Thais. The temple is a major visit destinations during the important Buddhist holidays of Makha Buja and Visak. Its importance, as well as its location, owes much to the legend of its founding.Doi suthep temple was established in 1383 by King Keu Na one to enshrine a piece of bone said to be from the shoulder of the historical Buddha. The holy bone shard was brought to Lanna by a wandering monk from Sukhothai kingdom and it broke into two pieces at the base of the mountain, with one piece being enshrined at Wat Suan Dok. The second piece was on a sacred white elephant that wandered the jungle until it died, in the process selecting the spot where the temple was later founded.

The Nāga staircase at Wat Phra That Doi Suthep temple.
At Wat Phra That Doi Suthep temple, you can try to walk up Nāga stairs. The Nāga staircase is lined on both sides with a snake-like being, called Nāga. This has its origin in the myth of the Buddha. The Buddha had reached enlightenment and was meditating under a Bodhi tree when it started raining heavily. A snake-like mythical creature appeared. It sheltered the Buddha with its hood from the rain. This was a Nāga called Mucalinda. The Nāga is often portrayed with multiple heads.
Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep even has a kind of elevator. If you don’t need to walk.

Jack is simply one of the best guides I have had in my travels in Southeast Asia. He is so warm and welcoming and ready to laugh. My partner and... read more I travelled to Sukhothai without many plans in advance. Jack had not been there in a few years but was fantastic at working things out as we go - taking us to some less well known spots and finding some of the best food in the area too. We spent one night in Sukhothai, then flew out of Sukhothai airport (recommended!). Jack looked after us well for the entire trip and we managed to pack so much in, while still feeling relaxed and not pushed for time. He really enjoys photography as a hobby too, so don't worry about getting some good snaps. We also visited Satchanali on the way to the airport, which I definitely recommend visiting - I actually preferred it to Sukhothai. Jack definitely deserves to be supported during the difficult post-covid recovery period. You won't find a better person in Chiang Mai!

Jack is the kindest and warmest person we could have ever asked for as a guide. After experiencing other private tours, his was by far the one I liked the... read more most. He created a tour based on our needs. For two days we visited Sukhotai, had some wonderful temple tops on the way and even managed to visit Sanchanalai before heading to the airport the day after.
If you are looking for an adaptable and understanding your guide, this is your place. We went to see the sites we were interested in, and got to eat amazing food based on his recommendations (local Thai food, not westernised versions). On top of that, he was kind enough to take pictures of us with our phones and his camera.
Overall, these two days were a memorable experience making a new friend who I would wholeheartedly recommend for anyone looking for a knowledgeable guide, with great humour and very kind human nature.
