Chiang Mai Hilltribe Coffee Tour, Taste Authenticity

The Experience: An Artisanal Farm-to-Cup Journey

What makes this one of the best coffee tours in Chiang Mai? It isn’t a tour you observe. It’s a living story you step into. At our Chiang Mai coffee Farm, the highland air, ancient soil, and the hands of the Karen community are the only ingredients that matter.

From the moment you duck beneath the forest canopy to the moment the bean smoke curls up from the fire with your first roast, everything is pure nature — and that’s exactly the point.

The Magic of the Ordinary

How We Stay Different ?

How do we stay different? By choosing quality over quantity. Our Chiang Mai hilltribe coffee tour is designed for the conscious traveler who understands that the best experiences can't be scaled.

Guided by locals with deep roots in the soil, you aren’t just sightseeing; you are being welcomed into a living home to share a farm-to-table lunch and swap stories. This is the heart of our Chiang Mai hilltribe tour.

  • The Wild Coffee Canopy (A Responsible Chiang Mai Eco Tour): Trek into the ancient jungle to see where true shade-grown coffee lives. Witness how our Karen families farm in harmony with the forest canopy, preserving the ecosystem without chemicals. You will even leave a positive mark on the earth by planting your very own coffee tree.

  • From Forest to Fire (A Hands-On Chiang Mai Coffee Tour): Become a living part of the coffee story. Experience the beautiful lifecycle of coffee—from touching the delicate white blossoms and wild red cherries to hand-roasting your own beans over an open flame. Master the pour-over brew and taste the spirit of the mountain.

We had a wonderful time on the Chiang Mai Hill Tribe Coffee Tour. Jack and his team took exceptionally good care of us from start to finish. They were warm, attentive, and genuinely passionate about what they do.

What stood out most was the depth of knowledge they shared — not just about coffee beans and brewing techniques, but also about the surrounding herbs, local agriculture, and the entire farm-to-cup journey. It was more than a coffee tasting session; it was an educational and immersive cultural experience.

Jack patiently explained different processing methods, roasting profiles, and hands-on brewing techniques, making everything easy to understand even for beginners. You can truly feel his respect for the land and the community.

Kudos to Jack and his team for their strong spirit in protecting Mother Earth and promoting sustainable farming practices. It’s inspiring to see tourism done in such a responsible and meaningful way.

Highly recommended for anyone visiting Chiang Mai who wants something authentic, educational, and heartwarming. ☕🌿

If you are interested in coffee, food, nature, local culture, farming, agroforestry, foraging this is the tour you wanna do! We’ve had so much fun the whole day. Learned about so many topics. Made a beautiful walk through the forest, roasted our own coffee, listened to a new language, tasted and smelled a lot of new things. Jack and Moonshine (our guides) were incredibly kind, fun, thoughtful, full of knowledge and enthusiasm. The lunch was delicious and generous.
Thank you so much. This was by far the best day of our journey trough Thailand.

What an absolutely amazing day! This was the best tour ever! Jack was the perfect guide and Moonshine’s farm was so exciting to see. The experience wasn’t just learning about coffee, but seeing the way of life of a Karen farmer. While trekking through the forest, we got to pick coffee cherries, plant our own tree (we’ll be back in 4 years to see it full grown!) , roast coffee (well went home with the coffee we roasted) & brew coffee. Jack explained everything. He was kind & funny & made sure we had a great experience. He is truely invested in improving the lives of the people in the village. It is not just a tourist adventure. This tour is about the people as much as the coffee.
Make sure you take THIS tour, not a copycat tour.

Jack and moonshine are fantastic hosts. This tour is also an education in Thai village life and so much more than just a great coffee experience. Running our own independent coffee house in Scotland we appreciate the hard work these guys have put in to create a unique product and a great day out. We learnt so much, highlights being the walk in the jungle and upwards to the current coffee plants and getting the history of Thai coffee making, and the key part it now plays in Thai life. The backdrop, scenery , hospitality and thought put into this tour will not be beaten!

A must do activity if visiting Chiang Mai.

From the hotel pickup to dropping off at the end of the trip, Jack and Moonshine were amazing guides and teachers about the coffee farm and its history. The lunch provided was absolutely delicious and hit the spot after a walk through the jungle, seeing the coffee tree farm, planting our own tree for the farm and experiencing the raw taste of the coffee pod plant. The workshop is fantastic. You learn how to properly roast to the grade of coffee you want and then roast your own bag to take home! Such a memorable experience and will be back to see how tall the planted tree has grown. ⭐️ 10/10 ⭐️

We did the full day coffee tour experience and it was unforgettable! Jack is an incredible guide who loves what he does and is very knowledgeable about coffee. The visit to Moonshine’s family coffee farm was memorable, as was the lunch, and coffee roasting/tasting session. We had the best time and can 100% recommend this tour to anyone visiting Chiang Mai for an authentic Thai coffee experience.

This experience was amazing! My mom really wanted to do a coffee tour and I’m so happy I found this one with Jack as the tour guide. This curated tour brings you into the jungle with a local family from the Karen tribe, teaches you the origins of growing coffee in Chiang Mai, planting your own coffee tree, an amazing lunch by Moonshine’s wife (it was seriously one of the best meals I’ve ever had), a coffee roasting and brewing demo before you get to do it yourself and bring your very own bag of coffee home. There was not a dull moment in the tour. Thank you so much Jack and Moonshine for a special experience!
This is a must-do if you are in Chiang Mai! What a truly special and unique experience that offers the total package - meeting the locals, exploring the jungle, learning about coffee and enjoying delicious food grown locally and prepared beautifully. This is not just about coffee either, but also about the hill tribes there and fascinating insights into the jungle and its nature! Everything was incredibly smooth and relaxing, and it’s an experience we will treasure for a long time.

We greatly enjoyed our day spent on the coffee farm! Jack and Moonshine were excellent tour guides, and we learned so much about the local culture, as well as agricultural practices and all parts of the coffee making process. We would highly recommend this tour for anyone interested in nature, organic farming practices, or coffee. They took great care of us and it’s a day we’ll never forget-do yourself a favor and go!

From the moment we were picked up at our hotel, we fell in love with Jack! He and "Moonshine" provided us with such an amazing experience in the mountains of Chaing Mai. We had a 1+ hour drive and heard a quick synopsis of what we were in store for. Upon arrival we had a quick tour of the property and switched vehicles for a more rugged 4x4 drive into the jungle. Bring bug spray! The jungle tour was incredible. They were able to show us so much about the farming and other local flowers and herbs. We came back to the property for a home cooked lunch (delicious!!) and workshop where we roasted our own beans, and made our own coffee. This is a cultural and immersive experience. 10/10.
I would gladly recommend this tour. The tour in and of itself was very comprehensive. It started by snacking on locally grown guava and bananas, and followed by taking us all the way up to the coffee farm and showing us the differences of coffee varietals and the necessary conditions for their healthy growth. The second half of the tour consisted of a coffee tasting and roasting tutorial.

However, what set it apart for us was the kindness of Jack, Moonshine and the entire family who took great care of us the entire day. It's moving to see the dedication with which they work on the farm, all to make guests feel welcome and to produce a high quality cup of coffee. We're very happy that we picked this tour.

We had a most memorable experience with Jack, from the first moment when he picked us from the hotel to the evening.

We learnt so much about coffee and how Jack’s farming partner has been meticulously farming tiny batches of coffee plants, in their shared philosophy of sustainable farming, despite it being a slower economic return than other methods.

If you want a pesonalised experience, this is it. Nobody is trying to upsell you anything at all, it’s truly all about sharing their love of the land and farming coffee.

We had an amazing day with Jack on the hill tribe coffee tour. The experience is split in to two parts. The first is a casual paced walk through the forest to see the farm, learn about how they grow coffee and plant our own coffee roots in the ground!

The second part we learned about how the coffee production method works, roast our own coffee beans (to take home) and a workshop to learn how to make a tasty filter coffee.

The hill tribe coffee crew are knowledgeable, friendly and create a really nice relaxed atmosphere, which made it feel like we were on a day out with friends. This has been one of the best day experiences that we have done on our travels through South East Asia, I would 100% recommend!

This was THE MOST MAGICAL trip we have done on any of our travels around the world. Jack and Saira were beautiful hosts picking us up from our hotel and taking us into the mountains outside Chiang Mai to visit the Coffee Farm they share in. On arrival at the stunning location of Mae Win we were treated to delicious teas, coffees and local snacks. We then rode in the back of a 4x4 into the jungle where we started a walk on which we passed paddy fields, tasted cinnamon straight from the tree bark, had our senses numbed by a local plant the locals use as an antiseptic. All along Jack explained to us what we were seeing and the history of the farm ably supported by his co-worker Moon Shine. My personal highlight was when we got to plant our own coffee tree in the ground with our names on labels around them. Thailand has always been a special place for means in this simple act, which I found deeply moving, I place the tree in the ground and drew the soil around it and it felt as if I have left a bit of myself in Thailand. We returned to Mae Win and were served the most delicious lunch. Had the trip ended there we would have had a wonderful time. But there was more - Jack had a workshop in which he explained to us the principles of coffee growing, showing us the beans at the various stages of drying. He then taught us about the roasting process and proceeded to set up a hand operated roaster which we all got a chance to use to roast our very own beans to our choice. We sifted them and then they were bagged up for us to take home a sensual memory of the most wonderful day.

We were a family of three with a 13 yr old. There was plenty to engage all of us. Our daughter was totally engaged in all the various aspects of the visit. Jack had been in touch the evening before to confirm arrangements and there were plenty of toilet opportunities. They also gave good advice on what to bring with us so that we were prepared for the walking. The walk lasted about 1 ½ hours and was gentle with some uphill but not taxing.

Jack and Saira were knowledgeable, engaging, personably and fun.

We would HIGHLY RECOMMEND this tour and are so glad that we chose to do it.

We had an absolutely fantastic day doing the coffee tour, I cannot express how much we learned, talked and laughed (and drank copious amounts of coffee of course). We were coffee beginners and we learned so much about the processes involved and how they affect the final flavour/caffeine content etc as well as the history of coffee in Thailand and the history of the village itself.
The walk through the jungle to the plantation was incredible despite the weather and the day absolutely flew by. Planting our own coffee trees was an unexpected bonus as well!
Jack was an incredible host, so friendly and knowledgable, and it honestly felt like the group were old friends by the end of the day. If you’re a fan of ethical tourism and coffee you would love this tour! Thank you to Sala and Mr Moonshine as well.

I can honestly only say great things about this tour. Jack was a great and attentive guide. We learned a lot about coffee and how they grow it in the jungle, had a superb vegetarian lunch in the village with a view over the mountains and finished the day off with roasting our own coffee beans and learning pour-over techniques. 12/10, absolute recommendation!

What an incredible experience! Our guide, Jack has such passion, deep knowledge, and genuine desire to immerse us in the local culture made this tour unforgettable. He shared the traditions and history of the towns with such respect and pride, and it never felt scripted – just authentic storytelling.

The tour was also very hands-on. We roasted our own coffee blend, trekked through a jungle farm, and even planted and named a baby tree! These little touches made the day so special and personal.

I also loved that the groups are kept very small, so it felt exclusive and intimate rather than crowded. It gave us the chance to connect more closely with the place and with Jack’s insights.

If you’re visiting Chiang Mai, I can’t recommend this tour enough. It’s the perfect balance of culture, adventure, and authenticity – an absolute must-do!

Worth every single penny!!! This was such an incredible tour and Jack was a fantastic tour guide with the best attitude a person can have! We got to tour the jungle coffee farm (which is a different way of growing coffee, and as such a very unique experience), plant a coffee tree and roast our own beans for home. On top of all this we received a very knowledgeable guide and had all of our questions answered very thoroughly. Jack and Mr Moonshine really know their stuff! I cannot recommend this tour enough! 11/10

Jack and Jeff delivered one of the most inspiring and meaningful tours I’ve ever experienced. This was not just about coffee — it was about people, culture, and the environment.

The tour took us deep into the heart of Thailand’s coffee culture, showing how organic coffee farming is helping to uplift tribal minority communities. Jack and Jeff explained how this work directly supports generational improvements in education and quality of life, creating opportunities that last far beyond a single harvest.

We walked through rice fields, coffee plantations, and fruit orchards, even passing a few friendly cows and a peaceful creek. Planting a coffee tree with my own name and date was an unforgettable touch — a living connection to this land and its people. Meeting and interacting with tribal members gave the experience a deeply human dimension, reminding me how interconnected we all are.

This tour isn’t just educational; it carries a powerful message about caring for the environment and helping one another in this shared home we call Earth. If you want to learn, connect, and make a positive impact while traveling, Jack and Jeff’s tour is an absolute must.

We had a fantastic time with guides Jack, Sarah, and Mr. Moonshine on our tour of the hill tribe coffee farm. We visited Chiang Mai and wanted to have a unique experience. Being coffee lovers, we decided to book a coffee tour—and it turned out to be one of the highlights of our trip!

This tour is run by a local family who truly loves what they do, and that passion shines through every part of the experience. You won’t just visit a peaceful, rural village in Northern Thailand—you’ll also explore a special coffee plantation where coffee is organically grown in the forest, alongside other local plants that Jack and MunChai introduced us to.

The tour itself was incredibly relaxing, giving us plenty of time to enjoy the surroundings and learn. Jack is an amazing guide with a deep love for coffee and over 20 years of experience. He shared so much knowledge about coffee cultivation and the local area. Since February is harvest season, we even got the chance to pick some coffee cherries ourselves! Lunch was delicious and, for those who don’t like spice, completely mild.

Important note: If you’re prone to motion sickness, I recommend taking an anti-motion sickness pill. The road to the plantation is quite winding, and the 4x4 ride can get bumpy.

From start to finish, I thoroughly enjoyed this day and cannot recommend it enough - Jack's enthusiasm and positive energy was contagious! This coffee journey was created with care and love by an amazing team of true professionals!

You’ll see how coffee grows in an organic environment, deep in the jungle, free of chemicals and pesticides. Along the way, you’ll learn about the local forest’s ecosystem, with many fascinating facts that are sure to surprise you. You'll also get to taste fresh local fruits, and lunch will consist of the most delicious homemade Thai dishes. Some of the food is non-spicy, making it suitable even for those with sensitive stomachs.

The coffee roasting experience is truly captivating. You’ll be guided through the entire process in detail, and the beans you roast yourself can be taken home as a souvenir.

And of course, the coffee! You’ll taste a variety of filter coffee brews and even have the chance to make one yourself.

We highly recommend this tour to every coffee lover visiting Chiang Mai. In our opinion, it’s worth every penny!

Actually, I rarely write reviews. But we enjoyed the tour with Jack so much that we would definitely recommend it. We were picked up directly from our hotel and greeted very friendly by Jack and his wife. On the drive to Hill Tribe, which took about 1.5 hours, Jack explained to us what we were going to do. It became clear that Jack is a real coffee lover and not only likes to share his knowledge, but also knows a lot about the history, cultivation, roasting and preparation. He was a real joy to listen to and learn from. Our highlights were the short hike through the jungle at Hill Tribe. On the way to the coffee farm, one of the residents also explained to us which herbs they use, for example. B. use to heal wounds. We were even allowed to plant our own coffee trees and then roast and taste coffee beans together. The coffee is grown organically, meaning no chemical fertilizers or pesticides are used. The residents of the hill tribe take care of the coffee plants every day. In addition, part of the proceeds goes to the residents so that they can also live off Jack's tour. For anyone who loves coffee and wants to learn something about coffee cultivation in Thailand or simply loves nature, this tour is perfect. The atmosphere was very friendly, as if we had known each other for a long time. Thank you so much to you Jack, your wife and your friends from Hill Tribe for the great experience.

This was easily our favorite tour in all of Thailand. Jack’s love and passion for coffee, the outdoors and the local culture was so evident as he took us through a Hilltribe village and coffee farm. We got to taste various coffees grown in the area, eat a delicious authentic farm-to-table meal, plant our own coffee trees (definitely a highlight), engage in hands on learning about local flora and fauna, feed some adorable cows, roast and take home our own beans, and make a pour over coffee. Jack, his wife, and his friend Moonshine (who lives in the Hilltribe village) taught us so much about coffee production, Thai coffee culture, and about the way of life of some of the villagers. The whole day was really well paced too, there was never a moment where we were bored or overstimulated. If you like coffee, nature, sustainability, and/or culture, you NEED to go on this tour. Bonus, we received amazing photos from the tour that captured our enjoyment of the day.

Unique and very enriching experience!
If you want to discover the Thai forest, a real authentic village, life among coffee and soy crops, cows, chickens and above all learn a lot more about the preparation of coffee and its aromas, this excursion is for you .

To begin, take a 4x4 ride towards the forest to walk through the moonshine fields and discover its stories. You even have the right to plant a coffee tree there and put your name on it! Then return to the village to eat an excellent friendly meal. The afternoon is dedicated to learning about coffee, Jack is very fun and professional. Everything is super well explained and above all we can practice it ourselves!
We leave with our roasted coffees and above all full of memories!

Thanks again, totally worth the price.

Jack’s hill tribe coffee tour in the Chiang Mai mountains are a great day out for coffee lovers or people that just want to be in nature and experience and lean more about small scale organic farming. Suitable for couples, small groups or even solo travelers as myself. I leaned a lot about coffee, from picking coffee cherries from the tree, to roasting and how to make the perfect poor over. This tour was unique, fun, and super informative. I learned so much about the coffee-making process from start to finish. It was super fun to take home beans we roasted, and learn how to do a professional pour-over. Beyond that, of the 2 weeks I was visiting Thailand this was by far the most culturally authentic experience I had. If you are wanting an opportunity to get a feel for what life is like for the Karen villagers who live in the mountains of Chiang Mai, this is it. We had an opportunity to enjoy a delicious meal prepared from food grown on the property, as well as tasting home-made whiskey. Everyone was great. Jack is super knowledgeable about coffee, and Sarah captures some great photos. Moonshine was wonderful to spend time with too. I left my sunglasses at the mountain, and he went out of his way to meet us and return them. This was an amazing, memorable day that I would recommend to anyone looking for a less touristy experience. A few things to be mindful of: this tour requires a lot of walking in the forest. It is a good idea to wear suitable shoes, have sunscreen, and bug spray. I did get a few bug bites but nothing too extreme.
