Wat Chiang Man, the oldest temple which probably dates from 1296. The temple was the residence of King Mengrai, who founded Chiang Mai and is noteworthy for a chedi supported by rows of elephantine buttresses.

Wat Chedi Luang consists of an impressive chedi, originally built in 1411. It reached a height of over 278 feet before it was partially destroyed by an earthquake in 1545. It now reaches a height of 196 feet. The temple also contains the city pillar.

Wat Phan Tao, The temple’s most interesting feature is its wooden vihara, a chapel for laypeople to pray in. The teak building was moved to the temple grounds in 1875 by King Inthawichayanon. Inside the main wooden building, painted teak pillars support the roof and lead the eye to the main seated Buddha image.

Wat Suan Dok, which means the field of flowers. This temple is one of the first temples with a large viharn or prayer hall. Wat Suan Dok is a large number of chedis. The tallest golden chedi in the Sri Lankan style is 48 meters high and contains the relic of the Buddha. A large number of smaller white chedis contain the ashes of members of several generations of the Chiang Mai Royal Family. The ashes were brought here from several places in Chiang Mai as requested by Princess Dara Rasmi early 20th century.
